There is no bad month to see the gardens, but there are very different ones. The gardens count more than 300,000 spring bulbs, grow over 900 plant varieties in summer, and switch to a lights display for the Christmas season.

Hours and prices below are from the gardens' official 2026-27 rates table; seasonal highlights are from the gardens' own season pages.

The quick answer

Mid-April to May for tulips and spring colour, June to August for roses and summer evening events, October for autumn maples and smaller crowds, December for the Christmas lights (3 to 9 PM). Avoid January 18 to 31: the gardens close for a staff holiday.

When is the best time to visit Butchart Gardens?

For flowers, mid-April to August; for colour without the summer crowds, October; for something completely different, the December Christmas lights.

Your tour date matters too: in the Christmas season the gardens open only from 3 to 9 PM, which changes how day tours are timed. If you are flexible, spring and early autumn give the best balance of colour and space.

Pick your season, then your date: this day trip includes the ferries and admission, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What is in bloom in spring?

Bulbs: the gardens count over 300,000, with daffodils and hyacinths best at the end of March and tulips, cherry blossom and dogwoods peaking around mid-April.

The gardens list more than 100 daffodil varieties and over 190 tulip varieties, plus rhododendrons and magnolias. Their spring season runs March 24 to May 31, and the bulb peak falls between early April and the first week of May. Himalayan blue poppies flower in the Japanese Garden in late spring.

Is summer a good time to visit?

Yes, for the fullest beds and the Rose Garden, which the gardens say is in bloom from June through August.

The gardens' summer page describes delphiniums followed by roses, begonias, fuchsias and hydrangeas, plus evening extras in July and August: concerts on Wednesday to Sunday evenings, fireworks on Saturday evenings and night illuminations, included with admission. Day tours run to a ferry schedule, so check whether yours leaves in time for these. Summer is also the busiest season, so book early.

What is Butchart Gardens like in autumn?

Calmer and colourful: the gardens describe red, russet and golden maples, dahlias and chrysanthemums from October.

Autumn runs October 1 to November 30 on the gardens' calendar. The Japanese Garden is the place for maples, and the gardens list more than 100 dahlia varieties. One guest in October 2026 found crowds minimal and noticed the chrysanthemums were planted but not yet open. Hours are shorter: 9 AM to 4 PM in October and 10 AM to 4:30 PM in November.

Autumn days are shorter, but the paths are quieter.

When is Butchart Gardens closed?

From January 18 to 31 (staff holiday) and on December 25.

Plan a winter trip for early January or February instead. The gardens describe winter as a quiet season with a few early blooms such as pansies, hellebores and witch hazel, and an indoor spring display in the Blue Poppy Restaurant in late winter. Some tours also change schedules in winter: the combo tour, for example, picks up from 6:00 AM between February and April.

Is it worth visiting Butchart Gardens at Christmas?

Yes, if you want lights rather than flowers: the gardens open from 3 to 9 PM with light displays, carollers and a skating rink.

One Christmas-tour guest said the gardens are not the same without real flowers, while others called the lights the highlight of the day. The Japanese and Mediterranean Gardens close for the season. Read Butchart Gardens at Christmas for dates, prices and the dedicated tour.

What time of day is best?

Early in the day for the quietest paths, or later in the afternoon, when one STAR guest found the gardens quieter.

On a tour you do not choose the hour, but you choose the order: gardens-first tours arrive earlier in the day, Victoria-first tours in the afternoon. See how long to spend at the gardens for each tour's timing.
